This week we have a custom hutch with secretary style door that was made for Stephanie and family.
They had a small area by the door that was unused and she really wanted to have an area by the door for mail, keys, phones, etc… After looking around she just couldn’t find anything to fit that space!
So she took some measurements and gave us a shout to see what we could come up with. We decided on a size and then a style that came from some references that she provided. We decided on a birch ply body with walnut accents.
Here’s the rich walnut after warm poly:
We added push-to-open bumpers and soft-down hinges for the secretary door, and soft-close hinges for the lower doors, again with push-to-open bumpers.
We hand cut the accents on the doors that hide the adjustable shelves, and hand made the drawers from walnut as well, using a continuous piece for the matching fronts. The legs and base were also made from matching walnut.
We stained the piece in true black and coated with warm clear polyurethane for a durable and lasting piece of furniture to pass down. Due to the thin nature of the space, we installed it permanently with some cabinet screws so that the little ones wouldn’t tip it over on themselves.
What a fun project to fill a small space and create a useful hutch for our amazing client!
Thank you Stephanie and thank you all!
Until next time!
